I believe every child deserves to feel known, capable, and supported as a learner, and that every family deserves a steady, thoughtful guide as they navigate the twists and turns of school. I am a co-founder of Root & Compass and an educational advisor with more than thirty years of experience supporting diverse learners in both public and independent schools. I have designed and led learning support systems, coached teachers, and partnered with families to ensure that students receive instruction and interventions that truly match their needs. I've always been drawn to understanding how learning works, what a task demands, where a student is getting stuck, and how to create approaches that help skills come together in ways that last beyond a single assignment.
My work has focused on students navigating learning differences, reading and writing challenges, executive functioning difficulties, anxiety, and school transitions. Drawing on my background in literacy instruction and assessment, special education, and inclusive pedagogy, I connect the dots between a child's learning profile, the demands of the curriculum, and the instructional approaches that help students thrive. Whether I'm working with a student, a family, or a tutor, I'm always thinking about what will help learning make sense and how today's work can build greater independence over time.
Previously, as a Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator in Boston Public Schools, and throughout my work supporting students and teachers, I spent years designing and refining curriculum and assessment. That experience gives me a practical understanding of what students are expected to learn, how skills build from year to year, and how units, projects, and tests can either support or strain a student with a unique learning profile. I have always been passionate about helping curriculum and instruction come together in ways that honor both the goals of the classroom and each child's unique learning profile. At Root & Compass, I use this perspective to align tutoring with classroom goals, help families anticipate upcoming demands, and focus support on what will matter most for a child's progress. Rather than simply helping students complete an assignment, I strive to create approaches and strategies that become part of how students think, learn, and approach new challenges.
At Root & Compass, I help families make sense of evaluations, prioritize recommendations, and build coordinated plans that evolve over time. I also love collaborating with tutors, thinking through complex learning challenges together, and refining instructional approaches until we find what truly works for a child. I collaborate closely with tutors to align instruction with each child's learning profile, classroom expectations, and broader goals, ensuring that tutoring is responsive, grounded in best practices, and never happening in isolation.
I am especially passionate about helping students experience themselves as capable, resilient learners. I believe that children learn best when they feel safe enough to make mistakes and when the adults around them share a thoughtful, aligned plan. I hope families feel they have a trusted partner who is just as invested in understanding why learning feels challenging as in finding thoughtful, practical solutions that help their child move forward. Together, we'll celebrate progress, adjust when something isn't working, and continue building a plan that evolves with your child.
