Root & Compass grew from more than 50 years of combined experience walking alongside children and families as they navigated the joys, challenges, and uncertainties that are natural parts of learning. Our work across public and independent schools gave us a rare opportunity to see children's educational journeys unfold over time, from the early elementary years through adolescence. As Directors of Learning Resources, Hanh in Lower School and Abby in Middle School, we had the privilege of supporting many students and families across nearly a decade of that journey. We saw how learning profiles evolved, when children benefited from more time and support, and when timely intervention could change a child's trajectory. Those experiences continue to shape every recommendation we make and every partnership we build.
We've worked with hundreds of families navigating learning differences, executive functioning challenges, anxiety, and school transitions. Comprehensive evaluations often leave families with something invaluable: clarity about their child's learning profile. They also leave families with pages of recommendations and big questions. Where do we begin? What matters most right now? How does it all fit together? We've learned that real progress comes from understanding a child's unique learning profile, knowing which supports matter most, and coordinating them thoughtfully over time.
In addition, we saw how difficult it was for families to find the right tutor and, once they did, how hard it was to know whether tutoring was truly making the difference they hoped for. Was tutoring aligned with classroom expectations? Were new skills transferring beyond tutoring sessions? Was their child making meaningful progress? We believe tutoring should never happen in isolation. Our educational consulting and specialized tutoring are intentionally connected, ensuring every tutor understands each child's unique learning profile and has an experienced team to consult with when questions arise, progress stalls, or a different approach may be needed, all while ensuring each session supports broader learning goals.
We created Root & Compass because we knew families needed more than answers. We wanted them to have a trusted partner who could help make sense of information, connect the dots, and build a thoughtful plan that evolves as their child grows. We believe every child deserves to be known, understood, and given the opportunity to thrive—and every family deserves to feel supported, informed, and confident that they are not walking the journey alone.
